As Seattle native, I was disappointed to watch the sleepy, provincial town I was born in grow into a bustling city with all the problems of a large metropolitan area. After we successfully launched our kids, we started to look for a new place to settle for the rest of our lives. A quieter place with a slower lifestyle that was not as crowded.
After 4 different trips in 4 different seasons, we landed in a place called Zenith. We came in search of a quiet place to live that had good water. Everyone we talked to about our dream kept saying, “Check out Monroe County.” So we did.
What is life like in Monroe County? Well to start, there are no traffic lights in the whole county. There are about 12,000 people. It is an agricultural area with many family farms still raising livestock and growing their own crops. The county has grown 3 times in its history – during Reconstruction, during the Depression and with the ‘Back to the Land’ movement in the 1970’s.
The community is made up of locals who were born and raised here (and so were their Daddies), the Back to the Land folks (who even after being here for 30 yrs are not considered locals) and the new transplants, like me.
There is a committed effort to community building, conscious living, eating locally and helping each other out in times of need, in addition to the charms of living in a small town where everyone knows your business. (I said that life here is good, not perfect.)
If you are looking for an active nightlife, chic-chic restaurants and 24/7 entertainment, this is not for you. But, if you are looking for a quieter lifestyle in a beautiful place to get-away to, consider Monroe County.
